PENN HAWAI'I YOUTH FOUNDATION

Selection of participants will be based on an application process administered through PHYF and disseminated to PHYF partners in the local community. Partners will include organizations that work with youth who have been placed into programs for a variety of rerasons. Partners will select participants they feel deserve the right to be part of the program and will prepare applicationsoutlining why they feel the student should participate in the program. PHYF will then review submitted applications, conduct interviews and will notify awardees through partnering agencies who initially provided applicant information.

Training Phase I - Theory Introduction to Martial Arts and the Academy Concept, Rules, Etiquette at BJ Penn's Academy. Uniform - 'GI'. What it means to wear this, why you need to respect it. Discipline - Respect of Sensei, Respect of Others, Respect of Self. Self Control, Honor. General Housekeepeing Issues - Things that will and will not be tolerated (Gum Chewing, Swearing, Fighting, Drugs, Paraphernalia, Shoes on the Mats, Disrespecting Employees/Gym Members/Coaches/Classmates. Maintaining a clean GI, Storage of Uniforms at the Academy. What you will learn here. What you won't learn here. Our rewards system, levels of accomplishment, belt system. Explain the art of Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu History Philosophy Why Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art choice - Foundation, Fundamentals. Terms & Names Why we wear the GI BJ Penn and Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Health Awareness Explain the role nutrition plays in training and study of martial arts. Explain the importance of the balance between body & mind. Emotional Health vs. Physical Health and the significance thereof. Training Phase II - Practice Introduction to Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu activities and training. Forms Terms/Names Exercises Training Phase III - Rewards and Outreach Activities Excursions Bring students to see BJ training. Have students share in the experience and intensity of BJ's training & during a night class. Experience a variety of outings and field trips. Hawaiian Cultural Outings to learn about traditional navigation & conoe sailing. Kalo growing, Kalo pounding and the cultural relevance to the Hawaiian People. Possible outer island visits for star students who have proven themselves - Kapolei Waterpark, Dave & Busters, etc. Belt System, Patches, T-Shirts Colored Belt System to indicate student progress level and accomplishments Patches to indicate participation in programs or outings. T-Shirts as rewards for good behavior


This is a drug free environment. Our zero tolerance policy is strictly enforced. Attendees must bow before entering the Jiu-Jitsu mats and must also bow upon leaving. This place is your home while you are here and must be treated with respect. No talking is allowed while the Sensei is talking. Show respect for your teacher. Bow to your training partner both before and after any exercise or training session. Always ask permission to leave the mat before exiting for any reason. Be careful and respectful of your training partner at all times. Belts must be worn tightly across the hips at all times. Fingernails and Toenails must be kept cut, long hair must be pulled back and tied up at all times. Students who feel ill for any reason, whether due to a cold-flu, stomach pains, etc., must inform the Sensei immediately. Biting, scratching, exchanges of verbally or physically aggressive behavior will NOT be tolerated under any circumstances. If a student does not feel comfortable with their training partner, it is his/her responsibility to inform the instructor so that a new training partner may be assigned accordingly. Keep in mind that you are here because you and the others around you have earned the right to be here. Show both proper respect and appreciation for the priviledge and opportunity you have been given, because there are many others who have not been as fortunate to have the opportunity to sit where you are sitting now. Honor & Respect the priviledge which you have been given. Your uniform consists of a Jiu-Jitsu Gi, Rash Guard, Mouthpiece and Kneepads. These items will be provided to you upon your registration. Girls must include the wearing of a t-shirt underneath their GI.
